Children’s Trip to the London Wetland Centre

Volunteers from Investec are taking children from our Community Links Hoskins Centre open access playscheme to the London Wetland Centre for a day during their Easter holidays! The 5-11 year-old children will have the opportunity to learn about plant and animal life through a pond dipping session with staff from the Wetland Centre along with a chance to walk around and learn from the ecological diversity of the Centre.
Childcare is increasingly seen among policy makers as an important tool in combating child poverty and disadvantage as well as benefiting children in all aspects of their development. At our open access play schemes, we offer free play opportunities for 5-11 year olds, keeping them safe, happy and engaged through educational play activities. Children need to be registered by their parent or carer. Once they are registered, children are free to come and go as they please, although staff will encourage them to stay for the whole session. We will provide a range of fun play activities(availability of outdoor play depends on the weather) and in the holidays offer trips and outings.
If you're a Community Links corporate partner and are interested in engaging your employees in volunteering at Community Links, visit our Corporate Volunteering Programme page to find out how they can get involved!

Stronger Communities, Stronger Economy

Today, the Council on Social Action, set up to advise the Government on how to promote social action, is engaging community groups nationwide in a first round of chain discussions to develop ideas about creating social renewal alongside economic renewal. The discussions will start with ideas set out in the Council on Social Action paper ‘Stronger Communities, Stronger Economy’
Community Links co-founder David Robinson, vice chair of the Council on Social Action, says:
“Recession could drive division and exclusion or it could unite us extracting greater value from all that we have, embracing new ideas and working together on common goals. We would not have chosen the circumstances but there are opportunities in recession. What are they and how might be realised for the benefit of us all? The Council is eager to hear and progress the answers to these questions”
Self organised discussion groups are taking place in London, Birmingham, Stoke on Trent, Liverpool, and Sheffield, and we encourage people to hold their own meetings in their schools, workplaces and communities. The ideas generated in these discussions will be fed directly back to the Council on Social Action, who will then make recommendations to the Prime Minister and government departments.
Have a look at a short video detailing the ideas in paper; more details at www.chain-reaction.org
