Newham’s Got Talent
Volunteers from one of our partners, Fremantle Media, the company which produces Britain’s Got Talent and X Factor, gave our children's and youth projects a unique opportunity – the chance to showcase their artistic talent! Over 34 acts from 11 centres entered the auditions, and the selected finalists performed brilliantly for families and friends in our Neighbours Hall with the company’s professional lighting, sound, judges and compere. Advice, Family and Community Work
In our reception each morning, our Advice services on welfare benefits, housing and debt are as busy as ever. On Wednesday mornings volunteers provide form filling support to help the vulnerable and elderly. These volunteers are all on our Advice course and true to our ethos of empowering our service users, many first came to us seeking advice themselves. Members of our 2008 class recently received their certificates; five are going on to study for a degree while four have secured permanent employment.… Read more.
Christmas 2008
Here's what we were able to achieve this year: Christmas Parties Our Children's parties were great fun! Over 500 children came to one of our parties this year. They watched a pantomime, this year was Dick Whittington and His Cat, which was enjoyed by all the children. They also played Pass the Parcel, got to dance and play parachute games with Mojo, an energetic entertainer and of course ate delicious party food made by our fabulous staff and volunteers. Class of 08 promise community benefits
Twenty-two learners, many lacking in qualifications/basic skills completed the two courses this year. One student who came to England as an asylum seeker in the year 2000 completed both the courses. She is now studying a Masters degree in International Legal Studies at the Metropolitan University. “Thank you for paving the path for me, it is a dream come true”. New Rokeby Centre gets Boris Johnson visit
Boris Johnson donned a ‘hoodie’ at our celebration of the completion of the Rokeby Community Links Centre at a joint event with funders the Private Equity Foundation. Mr Johnson welcomed this new brand new community centre for the people of the Rokeby Estate in Stratford at the end of a big volunteer day which saw employees of private equity firms leaving their desks and deals to get their hands dirty.
