What's Happening at Community Links Today?
Class of 08 promise community benefits
Congratulations to all the students who passed Community Links Welfare Benefits Advice and Community Development courses. Twenty-two learners, many lacking in qualifications/basic skills completed the two courses this year. One student who came to England as an asylum seeker in the year 2000 completed both the courses. She is now studying a Masters degree in International Legal Studies at the Metropolitan University. “Thank you for paving the path for me, it is a dream come true”. Graduates can go on to be community development workers or advice workers, benefiting their community.
Christmas Party at Hoskins Centre
Company supporter Investec hosted a children's Christmas party at our Hoskins Open Access Play Scheme this month. The children enjoyed passing the parcel, musical chairs, party snacks and decorating those homemade biscuits! They also enjoyed getting to know the volunteers from Investec, who made sure that everyone had an extra fun time.
New Rokeby Centre gets Boris Johnson visit
Boris Johnson donned a ‘hoodie’ at our celebration of the completion of the Rokeby Community Links Centre at a joint event with funders the Private Equity Foundation. Mr Johnson welcomed this new brand new community centre for the people of the Rokeby Estate in Stratford at the end of a big volunteer day which saw employees of private equity firms leaving their desks and deals to get their hands dirty.
Pro Contract for Jay Thomas
Today we heard that Jay Thomas, a young person attending our Youth Inclusion Programme, has signed a pro contract with the mighty Arsenal FC! Being in the East End, I am not sure how many of our West Ham supporting staff will be cheering him on when he hits the pitch but needless to say we are all thrilled and wish him all the best for a glittering future.
